Out of the brambles

Alabama is getting a new magazine this month… Thicket is set to hit newsstands in mid-January, promising six issues a year. Lots of notable names in their inaugural issue and a couple of local celebs on their blog.

I’m looking forward to what they have to feature on Alabama and Birmingham. I’ll let y’all know how the first issue looks.

One I’m looking forward to reading

While making the rounds today I ran across Buzz Girl’s post about Houghton Mifflin’s Spring 2008 list, which listed a debut novel by Jonathon Miles. The title is Dear American Airlines, and is billed as “an irate demand for a refund tut urns into a “cri de coeur” of a misspent life, talent unused and happiness lost.”

I recognized Miles’ name from his column on cocktails and his work at Men’s Journal. As I did some digging online he seems to be one of the more prolific and cross-subject reporters out there. So you may have seen his work elsewhere. I’m banking that his ability to pen a novel will be just as entertaining and insightful. We will all just have to wait until June to find out!

A book of book blogs

I ran across The Bookaholics’ Guide to Book Blogs the other day while doing some holiday shopping. I have seen plenty of online writings about the cottage-industry of “book blogs” and “lit blogs”, but never an actual book. Are there others?

Just a big ‘ol mob scene

I drove around town a little this evening taking in all the Potter Pandemonium. I’m always amazed at how many people come out for these releases. But I was no where near as excited as Line # 72 (pictured below) at Barnes and Noble at the Summit.
