Doggone Books

***Sadly this bookstore closed up in 2016. I’m leaving this post up as an archive ***

I stumbled across a used bookstore over in the Irondale area of town, so I thought I’d share. It’s called Doggone Books and enjoys the fortuitous traffic-inducing location of being two doors down from the Whistlestop Cafe (yes, THAT Whistlestop Cafe).

They are open Tuesday-Friday 10:30 am to 6 pm and Sunday 10 am to 3 pm.

If you read general fiction and some of the more popular history books that have been published in the past 10 years, this is a good stop. His “Alabama Books” section is growing too as the owners get plugged into the estate sale circuit. I’m not sure how long they’ve been in business, but I’ve been by three times now and have run across something new each time.

Here are some pictures, to give you a little preview.

  1. Greetings,

THANKS for your effort on this. I have been compiling and bookmarking sites to help me make the most of the short time I have left in Birmingham (hopefully…37 years has been quite enough). I was looking for online resources for bookstores and found you. Very helpful. I’ll be visiting often. Found some stores I didn’t even know existed!

  2. Big Kudos to a little shop with a big Heart!
Mr. Williams has the greatest attitude!! Seldom does a book dealer show this high interest in his customer. He knows his books (all small bits of varying wonders ‘has he been reading all these books?).Mr. Williams knows what his clients are reading and their interest, what is a good book for that person. This passion blended with good business practices makes this a great deal. He sells quality books at a good price. If you are just shopping for price, do not kick his tires too much, he doesn’t just sell books. Mr. Williams provides service!!
