The Man Booker Shortlist – 2008

Here’s this year’s list and I haven’t read any of them. Not sure why I feel guilty about that… I think it’s just that I’d enjoy this more if I had a horse to pull for in this race.

Amitav Ghosh Sea of Poppies (John Murray)
Linda Grant The Clothes on Their Backs (Virago)
Philip Hensher The Northern Clemency (Fourth Estate)
Steve Toltz A Fraction of the Whole (Hamish Hamilton)

Are you kidding me?

Following a Twitter link, from rgriner (who blogs here), led me to this list of “The 100 Best Reads from 1983 to 2008” as selected by Entertainment Weekly. It made me sad. Sad, sad, sad.

They call them the new classics with Cormac McCarthy’s The Road at #1 and Jon Stewart’s America at #100. No doubt, every book on this list was a BIG seller. Was that their only criteria? But Potter was pushed to #2, so something else must have weighed in on their calculations. But what?

I agree that most of these titles should be on a list like this, but certainly not stacked this way. We may have to develop our own list. Hmmmmmm…

Bookish Blog Bait

The ever-busy blogger behind kimbooktu.com has undertaken a new initiative, the Bookish Blogs directory. The goal seems to be to compile a massive list of all things booky and bloggy online and allow visitors to stroll through the listings, viewing screenshots, descriptions and leaving comments.

I’ve already snagged a couple new RSS feeds (because I just don’t have enough of those coming in). So check it out and add yours to the list, if your blog fodder is approporaite.
