The Parnasus on Wheels of the new millinium is making a stop in Birmingham today, Thursday, October 30th. The big Digital Bookmobile truck will be open from 10am-4pm at the downtown Central branch. The 18-wheeler will have demonstration stations and computers set-up to allow browsers the chance to learn about e-books, mobile books, digital audio books, etc.
None of these products are new to the internet crowd. But the part that’s really cool is that the event is designed to highlight and introduce many of our local library’s own digital download and media services. I plan on swinging by to see what’s new!
ED: Thanks to shadowhelm for catching my scheduling snafu. The Bookmobile is in town Thursday, October 30th. Sorry for the confusion.
I just saw over on the the Birmingham Central Library blog that you can now check out laptops while visiting that branch! How cool is that!? The only downside is that now there will be 20 more people crowding my favorite wi-fi spot!
It looks like that the other libraries in the system all have one laptop each to lend out, but Central has 20. You can click over to get all the details.
If you are a card-carrying member of the JCLC system, you can have $1 erased from your over-due fines for every canned food item you bring in. The limit is $10 knocked-off your record. The deal runs until the end of September, when all donated goods will be given to local Birmingham-area food banks.
September is also the JCLC system’s annual card-swap month. Meaning… the library will replace (waiving the $3 charge) your ratty falling apart over-used library card… but we don’t know anyone who has one of those…
