Murder in the Magic City

Tomorrow, Homewood library hosts the 2008 mystery fan conference menacingly monikered Murder in the Magic City. The door open at 9am and runs through 4pm. The cost is $45 and includes lunch (for those with reservations), drinks, snacks and a “goody bag”. Because of limited seating they have been encouraging reservations, but I am told a few walk-up seats are still available.

The all day event includes a panel discussion, a special session with award-winning author Donna Andrews and book signings. What’s cool is that fans can bring their own books from home to have signed by the authors present (a complete list of which is here). This is something that is really unique and fun, even for organizer Margaret Fenton.

We encourage it,” says Fenton. “I’m a collector myself, and there’s little that makes me drool more than a signed first edition. Except maybe dark chocolate truffles.”

Scavenging for books

I’ve heard of book scouting. Ever since reading John Dunning’s Booked To Die I have romantcized that I could amass enough book-knowledge to make a living squeezing every last undiscovered rare volume from local bookstores. But, I haven’t quit my day job yet… but this great article in the NY Times is one of the first times I’ve heard of book scavanging as a living.

I can’t imagine going through the trash here in Birmingham and finding enough discarded books of value to feed yourself. Which is about all the money the two guys featured in the article need, because they are homeless. What a quirky turn to the story. I’m not saying them being homeless is a good thing, I’m just saying that it made for an interesting news article.

It also tipped me off to Mitchell Duneier’s Sidewalk, which I had never heard of. But is now on my list, as the author uses these street salesmen to address the “Broken Windows” strategy/theory of cleaning up a neighborhood, which our new mayor has just begun to employ across Birmingham.

The Thicket magazine blog is announcing that all 25,00 copies of their first issue
have been delivered and I’m diging the page layout of the posted samples.

According to their site, the new Southern based magazine can be found locally, they are in Books-A-Million (Alabaster, Birmingham, Homewood, Hoover, Trussville, & Tuscaloosa), Barnes & Noble (Birmingham & Mountain Brook), Western, Bruno’s, Piggly Wiggly and Publix.

Birmingham Arts Journal turns 5

I just found out that tonight’s planned reception, celebrating The Birmingham Arts Journal‘s five years of publishing, has been moved to February 29th at Urban Standard (2320 2nd Ave. N). So we’ll all have to wait until then to meet the staff and some of the journal’s more recent contributors. The latest issue is in stores now and also available to view via pdf online, along with all the back issues. Which is pretty darn cool!

And here’s a little haiku for you to help welcome the weekend, which hopeful holds plenty of quiet time for you to read!
