Book Review: Relevance: Making Stuff That Matters

Relevance: Making Stuff That Matters by Tim Manners

The main idea of the book is that if a business can become relevant to consumers, then that business can thrive. I think that’s a great take on branding and was enough of a germ of an idea to get me to pick up the book. But the book never really grew from there, for me.

After some basic “problems with the business mindset” kind of stuff, Manners presents six “Relevant Solutions”. These are insights, innovation, investment, design, experience and value. Do any of these ideas sound new to you? Me either.

The book is mainly a series of “stories from the field” as various business folks relay their experiences with their brands. Of course, Apple is there and the car manufacturers. Manners did seek out Patagonia, who I thought had the most valuable insights in the book. They seem to concentrate on growing inside each sales channel, rather than chasing the Nike’s of the world. So that was cool. After many of the from-the-trenches stories the author adds a bullet point to try and sum up the story. Many of which seem kind of generic and dated.

So while, in this internet-empowered era I do think businesses must work hard to serve each and every customer and bring value to their product, in essence, become relevant, I’m hoping to find more books out there that might delve a little deeper into each of Manners “Relevant Solutions”.

Getting Mentioned

I just wanted to post a quick and very sincere THANK YOU to both the Birmingham Magazine and the fine folks over at Alabama Bloggers. I managed to make the pages of Birmingham Magazine for their Summer Reading extravaganza… which ran the month after their “Best Looking Sexiest Hottie” issue… maybe I need to start working out. But Carla Jean’s articles are still up, so go check them out while you can. Good stuff.

Also, my little book blog landed a “Center Stage” feature over on Alabama Bloggers. Thank you for that! Lots of good things happening at Alabama Bloggers. It’s a good one to keep an eye on.

All of this to say it’s been a busy summer, it’s always nice to get noticed and now it’s time to get back to regular posts and some good books. Though with this great weather, I’d almost rather be out hiking.

I Bought an iPhone3GS and Now I Want to Read

Not sure if you looked up in the sky last night, but a rare astronomical event occurred as planets aligned with soon-to-expire cellphone contracts and only a 5-minute wait at the local Apple store… so after many months of waiting… I finally got my iPhone. I spent the evening getting my gMail and Google Apps affairs in order, downloaded a cool typographic wallpaper and now I’m ready to read.

I haven’t bought a book yet, but I grabbed these iPhone apps and a few freebie books to page? flick? thumb? through. What I’m asking is… what reader/app am I missing? I’m coming late to the game and I want to start with everything in the arsenal and then weed out the slackers. So, my iPhone book reading slate on Day One is…

Barnes & Noble Store
Barnes & Noble eReader
Kindle for iPhone
Stanza
Fictionwise’s eReader
Shortcovers
BeamItDown book of Benjamin Button
Iceberg book of Jame’s Patterson’s Maximum Ride

Of course, some of these are eReaders and others are books as apps, which should be fun to try and see what bells and whistles are available. So let me know of any free or paid apps that I need to add. True, I am always looking for good reads, but this time I’m looking for who is getting right and who is presenting the best reading experience on the iPhone platform. Though not my usual genre, I hear I need to check out some Harlequin material, as they have been leaders in the digital space for over a year now, but what else am I missing?

This is going to be fun!

Barnes & Noble eReader for Mac – My Thoughts

So I downloaded the free Barnes & Nobel eReader 1.0 this morning, to check it out. I’m on a Mac and was glad to see that B&N rolled out versions of the readers for iPhone, Blackberry, PC and Mac all at the same time. That’s a good move.

The first thing I tried to do was open some pdf’s, mobi, epub and prc files…
